Dear ICF New Mexico Members,
Fall is often a season of transition. The shift in pace after summer and the rhythm of new routines give us a chance to reset and refocus. As coaches, this is also a time to pause and reflect on what is working, where we want to grow, and how we can bring fresh perspective to our clients and communities.
At ICF New Mexico, we are also looking ahead with intention. The Board of Directors has begun important conversations about the future of our chapter’s governance model. Our guiding question is: how can we continue to deliver quality programs and foster a strong New Mexico coaching community, within a governance structure that places less burden on volunteers?
Nearly every year our chapter faces a succession challenge, unable to fill key officer roles required by ICF Global. These positions carry specific eligibility requirements and significant time commitments. When combined with the limited size of our membership pool and the reality that many of us already juggle full professional and personal lives, it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify successors for these essential leadership roles.
Looking ahead, the Board acknowledges that our current governance model is not sustainable. We have initiated exploratory conversations with ICF Global and other chapters about possible alternatives. We are open to all possibilities, such as broader regional collaborations, shared leadership models, or mergers.
What ultimately matters most to us is ensuring that New Mexico continues to have a vibrant and connected coaching community - regardless of our governance structure. As options take shape, we will keep you informed and invite your input. In the meantime, I encourage you to stay engaged through programs, socials, and volunteer opportunities, as together we shape a chapter that supports both your professional growth and the broader coaching community.
And as always, please feel free to reach out to me directly at president@icfnewmexico.org if you would like to be part of this conversation.
With appreciation,
Deborah Thompson, NBC-HWC, PCC
